Be amazed by the Cuyo region, which in native language means:”Country of deserts”.

Andean-peaks-and-jurassic-discovery-12

This is a region where the high peaks, the snow capped volcanoes and the meandering roads through the Andes pre-mountain range and the steppes stand out. A region where nature astonishes visitors in its parks and natural reserves, where condors fly over as local guardians.

The trip starts in Mendoza where you’ll spend the first night. Amongst grape leaves, country houses and wineries we travel back in history around one of the most important wine-making regions in Argentina. You will take the well-trodden 40th route and we head towards Uspallata, but first you´ll take a detour to get to know the highest mountain in South America: The Aconcagua with its 6908 meters above sea-level, where you´ll have the chance to take a short walk to get one of the most spectacular views of this mountain.

The next stop will be Barreal. On this spot you can visit the Astronomical Complex El Leoncito (the visit should be booked in advance). The complex is located 40 km from Barreal in the Argentine province of San Juan, in the municipality of Calingasta. Inside the park and taking advantage of the characteristics of the sky – more than 250 cloudless nights, without wind and pollution – “El Leoncito” Astronomical Complex is visited every year by astronomers from all parts of the world who attend the place to observe the sky with its powerful telescopes.

You have been travelling for four days now and you will find yourself at the Agricultural Valley of Calingasta crisscrossed by the Rio de los Patos. Here you´ll find plantations of pumpkins and lavender and where you´ll be able to see some of Andean highest peaks such as the Mount Mercedario.

During the next few days, and after having left behind us Barreal, you will drive along the RN150 that will take you straight to the Parque Provincial Ischigualasto,a real voyage into the dinosaur era. Ischigualasto or “Valley of the moon” with the amazing shapes and colours with its landscape carved by erosion, is one of the most important Paleontological Sites in the world.

The discovery continues towards San Agustin del Valle Fertil where you’ll spend two nights and where you’ll visit the National Park Talampaya.

Talampaya National Park was created to protect important archaeological and paleontological sites in the region and it is included in “World Heritage sites”, declared by UNESCO. The great beauty of its landscape was the result of tectonic movements helped by the water and wind erosion. The great temperature difference: intense heat during the day and low temperatures at night also helps to create this magnificent landscape.

It is possible to do some trekking in the park to be able to appreciate the wonderful views it has to offer.

The last part of the trip, road trip back to Mendoza driving through San Juan. The city is surrounded by rivers, hills and valleys and there you´ll have the chance to visit historical, religious, scientific and cultural places related to Argentine history.

Some of the highlights that will wake your senses on this new adventure:

  • To Taste the famous Malbec Wine
  • To breath and be disheveled by the Andes fresh air
  • To be dazzled by the wind erosion on this breathtaking landscape

A real voyage to discover these hidden gems of Argentina.

Curious Argentinian and Chilean Patagonia

We love this region with its enormous landscape and cultural wealth. We decided to give Patagonia its own place as “Our curious Argentinian and Chilean Patagonia”.

Aonikenk-Chalten

The snow-covered peaks of the Andes give birth to many rivers and water-falls in Patagonia. From the majestic mountains to the volcanoes, Patagonia still is the virgin borderline in South America.

The 673.000 square kilometers of this area are so scarcely populated that the population density is extremely low. We´ll find just one person per square kilometer in some areas

The 28.300 hectares of the Parque Provincial Copahue, on the eastern frontier with Chile, where we find the crater of the volcano by the same name, is home to prehistoric araucaria forests. Extensive meadows,snow-covered Andean peaks, lakes and a picturesque lunar landscape of rocky origins.

The Glaciar Perito Moreno rises above the Lago Argentino as a solid wall of 4.8 kilometers wide and almost 60 meters high. One of the 47 massive ice fields is the Parque Nacional de la Patagonia Argentina. This force of nature is 260 square kilometers in all.

The sunset casts a pink glow over the granite peaks that ring a glacier lake in Torres del Paine. This national park is the crown jewel for Chileans. With an area of 242.000 hectares, this park is a kaleidoscope of different land formations such as the high mountains or the ice fields.

A lone lighthouse stands on watch over the Patagonian coastline of Ushuaia. The cold waters from Antarctica cover  a rich sea life all along the southern coast of Patagonia, including sea-lions cormorants and albatross.

Colores de Purmamarca

On our trip to Purmamarca, (Jujuy province) in February we decided to visit a newly opened hotel,Colores de Purmamarca Hotel, that undoubtedly became the highlight of the season

colores-de-purmamarca-1

In Purmamarca, the sights offer a wide variety of hues that leave on this small village a very special mark. The hotel is located 400 meters from the historical downtown Purmamarca that in the Aimara native language means:”Village on virgin land” with its adobe houses, its ancestral streets, its handycrafts fair, its cabildo and the church built in the 1600s.

Colores de Purmamarca is a 10 cottages complex, strategically located overlooking the Siete Colores(seven colours) Mount.

Every cottage has two stories:on the ground floor there are two bed-rooms in suite and satellite TV. One of the bed-rooms has a solarium patio. On the first floor you´ll find well-equipped kitchen with  a coffee machine, electric kettle and a toaster. It also has a built-in fireplace,a dining-room and a living-room. From the balcony you have a view of the Siete Colores Mount. On the other side of the house an open-air grill. At the complex you can also relax in the climatized Jacuzzi.

When built the hotel combined modern and traditional techniques to make the most of the materials they used in the construction, and in harmony with the sights and customs of the region. This, as an incentive to the locals to restore to full value their local building practices.

Betting on a healthier way of living policy,Colores de Purmamarca offers its guests bicycles to go and discover on their own, every corner and nook in this picturesque village in Quebrada de Humahuaca.

Food is ready and everything laid on the table. The cook is getting the coal ready to start the fire. The beef is ready to get “its intense tan”.

Everything is ready to begin with the “having dinner at an argentinian family´s home” experience. It´s time to share what we call “the table” and have a close encounter with warmth and affection which are important ingredients in our society. We´ll tempt you with tasty “empanadas” and we´ll teach you how to cook them while having fun in the process, drink a glass of good wine and chat with the cook while he is getting everything ready for the big barbecue and the best beef in the world. For those vegie-lovers we´ll also cook some vegetables on the grill. All this in the middle of fun and relaxed ambience.

Another good choice is to enjoy of a”true Argentinian grill” where we´ll try our “picadas”(different cold cuts, olives, dry sausage and cheese) a good wine and share in the experience of preparing and cooking a delicious “asado”.

As soon as we are welcomed into the house they´ll offer us a tray with different cheeses and cold cuts on it(our picada).

Then the salads will start coming plus the sweetmeats and the insides that locals like so much. All that to work up and appetite. Then we´ll have the big “bife de chorizo”(350grs) a very tender cut that reap up all the applauses.

Every different dish comes along with different kinds of wines specially chosen for the meal.

That´s why to be a part in the process of cooking an asado is a “must” for every visitor who wants to learn about our secrets and traditions.
