Its history goes back in time 80 years when there was just a man full of dreams about an empty piece of land that throughout the years became one of the most important “estancias”(ranches) in  Rio Grande. To spend a day at Estancia Las Hijas means to get close to its history while enjoying the natural surroundings.

Mr Cesar Vallejo buys 10.000 hectares of land where he establishes himself and builds the Estancia  Las Hijas that he names after his two daughters Susana and Morena. With a true visionary´s spirit he starts a saw-mill to make good use of the local wood but he had to bring other materials, blueprints and qualified workers for the undertaking.

The fields were then populated by sheep of the Romney March race. They also brought on board the ships cows of the Holando Argentino race and Arabian race horses. This way it became the first breeder on the island. Those were the beginnings of the Estancia Las Hijas.

We spend a day on the Estancia getting to know the establishment and its people, listening to their stories and anecdotes and learning about their customs.

We´ll see the sheepdogs guiding the herds and keeping them all together. An amazing job done by these dogs, by the way. We´ll see how they are herded into the corrals and then clasified into the three types of livestock  we can find at the Estancia.

Last but not least we´ll go for walk around the Estancia end its sorroundings to get aquainted with the facilities and where the different activities take place such as the “casco de la estancia”(or main house) always in the company of a member of the family who´ll introduce us into the country life.

While taking part in some of the activities the owners of the Estancia are busy cooking a scrumptious lunch: roasted lamb with  assorted vegetables salads.
